EPFO Removes Aadhaar: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has issued a recent circular, announcing the exclusion of Aadhaar from the approved documents for correcting the date of birth (DOB).
EPFO Removes Aadhaar 2024
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has decided to shake things up. No more Aadhaar card for proving your date of birth! In a recent circular (No: WSU/2024/1/UIDAI Matter/4090), the EPFO, part of the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Government of India, declared this change with the nod from the Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC).
The EPFO follows a directive from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). According to UIDAI’s Circular No. 08 of 2023, many folks were using Aadhaar as a date of birth proof, but guess what? That’s a no-go! Aadhaar might be your ID superhero, but when it comes to your birthdate, it’s not the chosen one.
UIDAI made it crystal clear: Aadhaar is a rockstar at proving your identity, but it’s not meant to vouch for your birthdate, as per the Aadhaar Act, 2016. So, EPFO has done the cool thing and dropped Aadhaar from the list of acceptable docs for correcting your birthdate. This change applies specifically to Table B of Annexure-1 of the Joint Declaration SOP they issued earlier.

EPFO Removes Aadhaar: UIDAI’s view on using Aadhaar for proving date of birth
Aadhar is great for proving who you are and where you live, thanks to its special 12-digit Identification number from the UIDAI on behalf of the Government of India. But here’s the twist – it can’t be Valid for Date of Birth.
UIDAI uses the documents you provide when you sign up or update, as explained on their website.
Now, the technical stuff: Rules 10(4) and 19A of the Aadhar enrollment and update regulations in 2016 have a plan.
An official note from UIDAI on December 20, 2018, made it clear – Aadhar shows who you are, not when you were born.
In 2023, the High Court of Bombay agreed, saying Aadhar isn’t your birthday proof, following the Aadhar Act 2016.
Keeping all this in mind, on December 22, 2023, UIDAI said, ‘Let’s not use Aadhar as proof for birthdates anymore.
