Stock Market Holidays in 2024 (March)

In March 2024, both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) are taking a break on three specific days, aligning with public holidays. These holidays mean no trading in the equity sector, equity derivative segment, and SLB segment.

Stock Market Trading Holidays Recap

Looking ahead, April holds two more trading holidays on the 11th (Id-Ul-Fitr) and the 17th (Ram Navami).

Additionally, various other dates throughout the year will see the markets closed, including Independence Day, Diwali, and Christmas. March anticipates three trading holidays, February is holiday-free, and January has one.

Both the NSE and BSE observe public holidays with a complete pause in trading across key segments. This public holiday list also extends its influence to the capital markets and the futures and options segments.

Stock Market Trading Day Timings

In the exciting world of equities, trading happens every day except for the weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and pre-declared holidays.

The day begins with the pre-open session, where order entry and modifications are on the table from 09:00 to 09:08 am

The regular trading session, also known as the normal or limited physical market, opens at 09:15 am and closes at 03:30 pm.

After a day full of action, the closing session takes the stage from 3:40 to 4:00 pm. It’s the final curtain call where the market takes a breather and prepares for the next act.

Is the Indian stock market open tomorrow?

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has a special treat for investors this Saturday, March 2, 2024.

This special session isn’t just for kicks; it’s a strategic move. The NSE is switching over to a disaster recovery (DR) site during the intraday session.

The stock market prepares for the unexpected and ensures smooth operations even in challenging situations. During this Saturday spectacle, only the equity market will be in action.

The commodity market, however, will be taking its usual weekend break. Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of WealthWave Insights, spills the beans on what to expect.

The equity and F&O segments are ready to roll on Saturday. But, and it’s a big but, the commodity market will be napping as usual during the weekend. If you’re a market enthusiast, mark March 2 on your calendar.

Special live trading session timing

On March 2, there will be a special trading session with two parts. The first part starts at 9:15 AM and lasts for 45 minutes. The second part kicks off at 11:30 AM and wraps up by 12:30 PM.

During the March 2 session, all futures contracts can fluctuate within a five percent operating range during the special trading session.

Securities in the Future and Options (F&O) segment will have upper and lower circuit limits of five percent, while those with a two percent limit will maintain their existing two percent circuit limit, according to NSE.

The measure prevents excessive volatility and maintains market stability during the live trading session.

Conclusion:

In 2024, India’s stock markets, led by the NSE, have specific trading hours and holidays, ensuring a dynamic yet structured environment.

March sees a special Saturday session for strategic disaster recovery, maintaining equity market activity while commodities take a weekend break.

The unique trading safeguards aim to curb excessive volatility and uphold market stability.
