About Ramtek

Ramtek, in Maharashtra, is well-known for its Lord Rama temple. It is located 40 kilometers from Nagpur. According to legend, Lord Rama spent four months here during his banishment along with Mother Sita and Lord Lakshman. The temple is a timeless beauty that is made entirely of stones.

Also known as Garh Temple or Sindoor Giri, it stands on a small hill, resembling a fort more than a conventional temple. Among the notable features is the eastward-flowing Suranadi River. Ramtek Temple History

Ramtek Temple, situated around 40 kilometers from Nagpur, Maharashtra, is a fascinating abode of Lord Ram. According to the tale, Lord Rama, along with Mother Sita and Lord Lakshman, spent four months here during his exile.

Mother Sita even established the first kitchen, serving food to local sages, as mentioned in Padmapuran. Thanks to Lord Rama’s grace, the temple, which has stood for centuries and is entirely composed of stones, is said to be unaltered.

Built on a small hill, the Ramtek temple is also known as the Garh temple or Sindoor Giri, resembling a fort more than a traditional temple. A unique feature is the Suranadi flowing towards its east. King Raghu Khonle initially constructed it as a fort.

On the grounds of the temple is a pond, and the inhabitants claim that the water level never fluctuates, defying gravity. It’s interesting to note that the image of Lord Rama appears on the top of the temple when lightning strikes.

Ramtek holds significance as the meeting place of Lord Ram and Sage Agatsya, who not only bestowed Rama with knowledge of weapons but also the powerful Brahmastra. Shri Ram was informed that the scattered bones were the remains of sages who had been startled during prayer.

To eradicate demons hindering rituals, Lord Rama took a vow. Sage Agatsya also informed Rama about Ravana’s atrocities, guiding him to use the Brahmastra to defeat him. Ramtek is still a revered location full of architectural wonders and mythological stories.

Ramtek Temple

Ramtek has a famous temple honoring Lord Rama, which is thought to be the place where Rama slept during his banishment.

Legend has it that demons disturbed sages performing rituals, prompting Rama to take a vow (‘Tek’ in the local language), giving rise to the name Ramtek.

Those who vow here are said to be blessed. The temple, constructed by King Raghuji Bhonsale, has been a place of worship for centuries for the ‘padukas’ of Lord Ram.

Notably, Ramtek is associated with the renowned poet Kalidasa, who wrote Meghdootum in these hills. It’s also linked to former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, who contested an election here.

The town is recognized for its ancient Jain temple, which gained popularity when Jain Acharya Vidyasagar visited. With his inspiration, a significant Jain temple was built, earning the name Atishayakshetra Ramtek ji due to reported miracles attributed to the ancient Jain statue.
